Needs work.
They lyrics are way too prose. It almost comes across as a rant. Definitely needs to work on the lyrics. Half of my Heart DESTROYS Heartbreak Warfare. |

I think both could use a little more work. At this point I think I might like Heartbreak Warfare a little more. I think both songs have a lot of potential but
I think he can write better. From a songwriting perspective it all seems too "I this me that can't stop loving you, you me we this that us you me then
you came". I think it's more creative/witty or whatever you want to call it to let metaphoric/figurative language drive a song.
I don't know if what I'm saying even makes sense. I think this.... then I listen to his other songs and a lot of them still have all the pronouns and first person, but still sound better written. I know, these aren't finished products, but for some reason I'm not totally sold. Maybe I'm just biased because I was hoping he'd write more power Trio songs
I don't particularly dislike the new ones though, and I'm sure I'll come all the way around by the time they make an album. On another note, it's all there melodically speaking. The melody on Half of My Heart is completely contagious. |

I agree with Erica, half of my heart is def better than heartbreak warfare. I do like them both lyricly though. Half of my heart just gets in your head and
stays there!
Sure they were both be rockin on the CD once they are complete!

It does sound like a pouty rant, but I really, truly love it. This and HOMH are both big gut-punches in my opinion, but true that HOMH is more easily
acceptable melodically. HW does seem to sort of repeat the same sentiment over and over, but there are true gems in some of the lines, I think: "Good to
know it's all a game, disappointment has a name..."
We'll see. You know John, he makes up his mind and changes it back again. :) He also knows he's up against himself, and if he wants to rise up to Continuum, he'll bust his ass to do so.

HollBeth wrote: I LOVE this song.... He's obviously not totally finished with it...but I really like the concept. I love all the verse lines
This song to me is the perfect sentiment for "Broken" people who can't be honest with themselves or their partner about what they want. I totally related. Why do two people have to throw daggers? And you know it happens... Why can't we just say what we're feeling without intentionally trying to hurt the other person? Why is it that when we're in love, we still can't allow ourselves to be vulnerable with our partners? And accept what their saying as less criticism and more help. I've almost warn myself out on this song I've played it so much.. I welcome the "over-produced" version. Maybe it's just where I am in my life that I like it so much, you know Johns songs can have more meaning at certain times...and I am at the point where I just don't have the energy to argue, call names, manipulate...this is how I feel either we're going to work this out or not........... Maybe that's why I usually end up alone in my closet devouring a pint of Haagen Daz.

It's interesting to see a songwriters (hi Mark) comments on these raw songs. I'm always only at the receiving end, but must admit I'm hoping for
genious again (Split Screen Sadness ish) and I don't feel it yet. I've only heard the songs a couple of times and will let them be until the finished
product is out. I feel like I'm opening Christmas presents in the dark on December 22 ;o)
V, I'm sorry to hear that's the point you're at right now, but I'm glad there's music to support and carry you. You'll get there girl...........and ice cream always hits the spot, enjoy! |

(Well helllooo Anne!)
I figured I'd drop in and update my opinion. I'm listening to the new songs and I THINK Half of My Heart just hit me. I'm not sure though. I'm holding out judgment on all the new stuff for a long time to come. |

"Heartbreak Warfare" TOTALLY pwns "Half of My Heart." The melody goes better with HW- HOMH *sounds* like it's an upbeat song, but the
lyrics don't match that. Aaaaand really?? "If you want more love, why don't you say so?" That HURTS. This record is gonna give
"Continuum" a run for its money, I think.

Anybody want to help a sister out and give me a link/download? I haven't been on the Internet much lately, so inevitably I fall behind on my John updates!

Laurie,
Here is the link for One Splendid Evening, with the debut of the full "Half of My Heart." One Splendid Evening feat. debut of "Half of My Heart" Here is the link to John's show 1, featuring the second performance of "Heartbreak Warfare," which I think is a bit clearer than the Lido version, but the Lido version was the debut, and if you want it, message me and I'll send that single file to you. John's Main Show 1 w/ Heartbreak Warfare

I can't wait to hear Heartbreak Warfare (and of course the rest). After hearing the snippet from the making of the video, I can tell I am going to love it.
